Request received to amend the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law

The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform the community that it has received a request to revise the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law. The request was submitted by the Election Law Working Group. A 30-day community feedback period begins today and ends Saturday, December 16, 2017.

In general, the amendments to the law are structural and cosmetic except for the following:

  • Proposed change from an elected Electoral Officer to an appointed Electoral Officer;
  • Extract regulatory measures from the Election Law to be a stand-alone document that coincides with the law.

This is a Type I law that would follow the Amendment Process with the Technical Drafting Committee determining the Scope of the amendments.

The next steps will see the Technical Drafting Committee meeting to:

  1. Begin consultations throughout the community on the proposed amendments to the law;
  2. Scheduling of the Community Stakeholders Consultation to obtain a community Mandate and approval of the Purpose of the amendments to the Law to move through the Community Decision Making Process;
  3. Holding the first Hearing in the New Year.
